Paddy gained experience from his last journeys and used one of the best cars in in automotive history past, present and future (a rental) for this trip. Good friends in Donegal told him that Crockalough Hill (Inishowen) is a nice place to visit, because there is a lovely lake and a radio station. But one needs a off-road vehicle to get there. Yeah sure - challenge accepted! As you can see from those pictures and afterwards in the film, Paddy was there. Paddy was (literally) on top ‐ but pride comes before the fall. A few days later, Paddy tried to avoid an obstacle (another car) on the road and therefore took a turn into a different road. What could possibly go wrong? After two or three kilometers, there was this huge pot hole in the middle of the road. Paddy tried to avoid hitting it ‐ the best car in automotive history past, present and future failed miserably to support him ‐ and then it happened...

This episode shows Paddy on his painful way to Malin Beg in Donegal County. Obstacles on the road like other drivers or sheep constantly slow him down, especially at Glengesh Pass, until he is stopped by a traffic jam at Glencolmcille Folk Village. This film contains additional recordings at night and they are so bad that Paddy never recorded night scenes with his GoPro Hero2 afterwards. The last minutes of this episode show scenes from Paddy in his natural habitat. All's well that ends well.

This episode is all about County Donegal (Contae Dhún na nGall) and under the slogan "Up here it's different". County Donegal is one of Paddy's favourite places. He loves to drive around there, narrow and bendy roads without traffic. Even Paddy's most-loved stop sign is on one of Donegal's roads. Another thing about Donegal roads is that you'll never know where you end up. Take, for example, the road behind Donegal Airport, no one would expect one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Well, that's not true. Paddy, the Navigator, would know ‐ because that's what he does. And that's why there's a tribute song to the Navigator in this episode. The film concludes with an homage to old days with crappy equipment. Thank God Eris these days are over.

Paddy enjoyed a superb countryside and surprisingly nice weather on Inis Eoghain instead of driving through snow and ice. Paddy enjoyed it so much that he was eager to try out new things. Traditionally Paddy places his camera on an engine bonnet, searches precisely for the right spot and then never changes it again. But not this time. He placed his GoPro on the driver's door and pointing backwards on the car's boot. This episode shows lovely spots around Malin Head, such as the most northerly point of Ireland or a moment when Paddy talked to a local and donated some coins ‐ needless to say he did not leave his car for that. The closing scene is about King Rudi, a small dog who loves to chase after small things. Take care, Rudi! May you catch your prey one day.

This seasons intro shows the road L1472 (R254) near Chur Hill in County Donegal. This particular road is famous for its trees, which tend to grow right into that road *cough*. Anyway, Paddy disproves four lessons about travel in Ireland: First, people in continental Europe often complain/joke about bad weather in Ireland. Well... Second, some say it's just not possible to drive fast on narrow roads. Third, there is always another driver going faster than you. Paddy tried very hard and drive more than two thousand kilometers on Irish (and Northern Irish) roads to disprove those myths. And last but not least, one should not watch out for animals on the road in Ireland, especially sheep. What could possibly go wrong?

The saga of Paddy Murphy started on a rainy day in June 2010. Five lads drove on Irish roads, their equipment was non-professional and nobody knew nothing about HTML5 and video encoding at that time, even the source format was wmv (sic) ‐ ambitious but rubbish. Thanks to Sven for this film. A few years later, Paddy would know two things about video editing ‐ and both are wrong.

Both mountain passes, Nufenen and Klausen, are favourites of Paddy. Even though these are two completely different to drive. Nufenen has a wide road, starts with long curves (from South) and has a few serpentines ‐ a nice road for a VW Scirocco. Klausen Pass, on the other hand, has narrow roads, it's hard to overtake and one has to take corner sharply. Sometimes Paddy wished he would own a four wheel drive to improve sharp acceleration after driving around a corner. There is debate about background music in this episode. Paddy experimented with classic music pieces and metal songs in the second part of the episode. Well, some like it ‐ others not so much.

If someone asks Paddy Murphy what the best way from Bellinzona to Glarus would be, he will answer: Nufenen ‐ Grimsel ‐ Susten ‐ Klausen. This episode shows two of those mountain roads. Grimsel Pass is like a motorway over the mountain, when you start in Gletsch, wide road, some serpentines and long, straight tracks. Interesting fact, at the summit is a lake called Totensee (lake of the dead). According to Wikipedia the name Totensee is said to be derived from soldiers of Duke Berchtold V of Zähringen who were driven into the lake by the people of Valais. The Susten Pass road connects Innertkirchen with Wassen in the canton of Uri. There is a 300 meters long tunnel at the summit and it would be a brilliant idea to use a light in that tunnel, especially for cyclists.

The similarity between the San Bernardino and St. Gotthard Passes is that both mountains can be circumvented using major traffic tunnels. But nobody in his right mind would prefer a tunnel over a mountain pass road! Some say there is an alien base hidden in plain sight on the summit of San Bernardino, but who believes in ghost stories these days anyway. In this episode a scene is announced with the simple word Geronimo! ‐ Paddy uses this exclamation occasionally when he overtakes more than one car at once.

When mountain roads are open for public traffic after winter season there is a lot of road work to be done. That concerns the Albula Pass as well ‐ so Paddy had to watch out for temporary non-paved road. The driving experience over Monte Spluga this time was so bad that Paddy decreed four golden pass drive rules. Nobody should assume that he's alone on the road. Those rules make sure that every driver will become a master of Zen and all maniacs on mountain roads will be gone forever. They will make the world a better place. And Paddy will act as a shining role model, won't he?

The early driver gets snow on mountain roads, says an old proverb. Might have been something with birds and worms, too, but Paddy does not eat worms. Paddy started driving mountain roads as soon they were open. The people of canton Grisons did a good job and so was no snow on the road (sadly). The most interesting part of this episode is its soundtrack. Paddy chose classical music pieces when he went up hill and their metal counterparts for downhill.

The Julier and Maloja Passes are both open in winter because they are important links between valleys in Switzerland and Italy. However, that implies all sort of traffic uses those roads such as lorries or buses. And to make matters worse, the Maloja Pass has twisted and blind curves. So there is a good chance to meet a bus and a lorry in a curve without warning. Some say Paddy drives to fast ‐ but they are wrong. There is now proof to dismiss this false accusation once for all.

Torr Road connects the two villages Cushendun and Ballyvoy in Country Antrim, Northern Ireland (see on map). Paddy drove a great number of roads in his life, among them famous Swiss mountain roads, but he won't forget Torr Road. He has taken her to his heart. This road has nearly everything: sharp corners, straights, up and downs, a magnificent view and sheep... in short Torr Road is fucking brilliant! Paddy drove this road many times and at least the post man (watch out for a red car in the film) definitely hates him for that. Sorry, Paddy couldn't resist. However, Paddy never drove this road in a proper sports car. That's on his bucket list. Torr Road, in the direction of Derry, ends in Cushendall Road (A2) and if one follows this road, he ends up in Ballintoy. Ballintoy is a small village and civil parish in County Antrim. The village has a population of 165 people ‐ some say even less and it's maybe a death trap for tourists ‐ but at least three churches. The best known church is the white Ballintoy Parish Church, on a hill above the harbour.

Inishowen is a peninsula in County Donegal and has a 100 mile coastal route called Inis Eoghain '100'. Just follow all brown signs along the road and you can't miss it, can you? Team Paddy Murphy laid the groundwork for their successful rally career on exact that road! Paddy started at the most northerly point of Ireland, in Malin Head. After a few kilometres they passed a funeral procession as mentioned a few weeks ago. The tribute for Neils is part of this episode as well. The journey goes around the peninsula, the road and landscape differ quite a bit. For a start, Paddy drives through a town on a wide road and found himself in the middle of nowhere in the blink of an eye. On a small and narrow road and he has to look for tar between all the green ‐ well, maybe we're being a wee bit hyperbolic here. Paddy's tip of the day: Just drive as quickly as you can ‐ The faster you go, the less pot holes you'll hit. The key is to use the momentum generated by forward movement and sort of fly over the gaping maws that open in Irish roads. This way, you only hit every tenth pot hole, plus you can't read those irrelevant messages on the road. This episode is exceptional in that Paddy "Driver" Murphy and Paddy "Navigator" Murphy show up in person in the final scene.

In this episode Paddy tried to find out which disruptive force is necessary to stop him for good. He affronts dangers such as bridges or severe bends, braves the weather in all its forms (on the road to Pettigoe) and defies sheep on the road. So Paddy could not be stopped on his way to Port, a deserted village about 15km from Glencolmcille in County Donegal. Shortly before Port is a nice S-bend and Paddy could not resist to go back and forth trough that bend. However, what will happen will happen. A little screw stopped Paddy temporarily ‐ a tyre was punctured. Luckily Paddy could save himself and he reached a small garage in Kilcar (seriously, we're not making this up). The guys were very helpful and fixed the tyre in a jiffy.

In this first episode Paddy tells you everything you have to know about driving on Irish roads (and more). Some say traffic signs are sort of a recommendation ‐ but be careful! Paddy heard from a friend that the Irish have a database for foreign traffic offenders. Paddy "Driver" Murphy and Paddy "Navigator" Murphy met Paddy "Chef" Murphy in Doolin, County Clare and The Chef had a lot of maps of County Clare and The Burren. A deserted village was marked on one of those and Paddy decided to visit that place. Sure, what could possibly go wrong... Well, Paddy knew about Murphy's law, however that knowledge did not protect him. Everything that can go wrong, will go wrong. ‐ Paddy was driving a Renault Clio, The Chef called this car Renault Clitoris, because he taught that this is a pussy wagon (and he was right). ‐ At the beginning it was not that bad. The road was steep, had a few stones, but not a real problem for Paddy. But then the road became muddy and on top of hill Paddy stopped. He had to drive downhill and up on the next hill. The Navigator asked if The Driver would be able to do that. ‐ Sure, how hard can it be... Let's say it was not a brilliant idea to do that. Neither was it a splendid idea to turn the car in the meadow. Luckily a local farmer came for the rescue. And nearly crashed his tractor as well. After a few throwbacks they managed together to get the car out of its misery... Did Paddy learn anything from that experience? Who's to say...
However, Paddy's words of wisdom are: «The thing about Irish roads is that you'll never know what comes next after a hill or a bend. Just close your eyes, come and rely on the luck o' the Irish.» The soundtrack in the first part of this episode is from a band named Pigeons on the Gate. They are from from Winterthur and Bischofszell, started playing Irish traditional folk/rock in 2010 and listen to them live is just great craic!
